The Local SEO Checklist: 12 Steps to the Google Map Pack

May 30, 2026 · 7 min read

The local map pack is the highest-value real estate on Google for any business that serves a geographic area. These twelve steps are how we take clients from invisible to top-3, in the order we actually do them.

Foundation (do these first)

1. Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile — every field, every service. 2. Fix NAP consistency: your name, address and phone must match everywhere. 3. Choose primary and secondary categories deliberately; the primary category is the strongest single signal. 4. Add real photos monthly — profiles with fresh photos get measurably more calls.

Momentum (weeks 2–8)

5. Build a review engine: ask every happy customer, the same day, with a direct link. 6. Respond to every review within 24 hours. 7. Publish Google Posts weekly. 8. Build city and service-area pages with genuinely local content — not find-and-replace templates.

Authority (ongoing)

9. Earn local links: sponsorships, chambers, community events, local press. 10. Build citations on the directories that matter in your industry. 11. Embed a map and add LocalBusiness schema to your site. 12. Track rankings by grid position across your service area, not just from your office's zip code.
